Maia's Social Commentary
OK, If y'all want to know how I'm doing, then call me or something.
I've decided this blog shall be for social commentary, pop and politics, less "my crisis" ranting, and more good old-fashioned down-to-business ranting. Maybe I'll add links on here for things that interest me or something. I just feel better about it that way, or else this blog will die. And I don't want this blog to die, especially since I just revamped it and everything. I'm really quite attached to it.
To start my new blog way of life, I'll post one of the letters I wrote to my penpal in Austria, because what is more interesting than a letter? Hooray for the free press! By the way, Connie is 15 years old, from near Vienna, Austria, and her first language is German, although she also speaks English because her mother is from Australia :)
Hi Connie,
Austria seems like a really romantic and awesome place to live.
Right now I'm sitting at my dad's computer, in his study, and I can hear the clacking of my sister's high heels as she is moving around the house, getting ready to go to a orchestra concert. She is wearing a black feather boa, with her long hair down. Lots of pizazz :)
You know, I love music too! I love Belle and Sebastian, and Weezer, and the Shins, and lots of other "indie" bands in the states and overseas. Do you like alternative, or hip hop, or mainstream, or underground music? What do you like about it?
My school is really difficult too, especially since I'm in classes like calculus, and 4th year spanish. I love my school, because it is really liberal and people are accepting here. Homophobia is not a big problem like it is at some other schools, and people are free to speak their opinions. However, it is not so pleasant to be a republican and/or christian at this school because you have to be constantly defending yourself. There is a lot of prejudice in this country, but then, there is also a lot of blind trust. I am talking right now more about republicanism than christianity, because I am fine with christianity, but I'm angry about republicanism. Our president right now (George W. Bush) is a republican and he pushed his way into office by using the Supreme Court, so the people here didn't actually vote him into office. He infuriates me. And since you are from another country, I just want to apoligize on behalf of all Americans, even though it won't change what we have done, because I am really truly deeply sorry about our interferance overseas, and in the affairs of many other countries. I and many other people in the USA think that George Bush is an idiot, and I really hope that he loses the election this year so he won't muck up the world even more than he already has.
Let's see, you asked how school is like here. I go to a big highschool, with 2000 students, although I suppose it is fairly small in comparison to highschools in China or Japan or places like that. There is a lot of competition to do well at my school, although it is mainly competition to get into a good college, rather than a competition to see who gets to go to college. I had a friend once who moved here from South Korea, but then she had to move back, and she had to work really hard to get into a school that taught English well, because if you didn't get into that school then you were at a disadvantage and got a worse education. But the public school system here is really well taught, although we are under-funded.
I have one best friend named Rose, and a larger circle of friends (mostly girls) named Megan, Rachel, Tricia, Lerryn, Yujung, Carina, and Danika. My guy friends are named Lucas and Drew, and Matthew I suppose, although I don't know him that well yet. I just met them this year, but they are really nice and intelligent and funny, though they all have their quirks.
Rose is wonderful, I have known her for almost fifteen years now. We met when we were toddlers. Today we are still best friends. She is a musician, and she finished her debut album (called Fairy Stories) this past fall. She wrote all the songs herself, and performed them too. I played trumpet on one of the tracks, although I don't play trumpet anymore.
My other friends are mostly Asian, and they are really into their schoolwork, although I hate to generalize them like that. Tricia has an infectious joyful laugh, and Yujung is our school Vice President. Rachel is a friend of mine from middle school, and she is on swim team and works a lot at her parent's asian food store/restaurant. She has shoulder-length black hair, and loves Hello Kitty (excessively perhaps?). Lerryn is a friend of mine, although I don't see her that often, and she has really bad luck. The people in her family don't live very long, and get all kinds of illnesses and diseases. But I like Lerryn, although some people don't, because she can be bossy. But often people change when you take the time to pay attention to them, and in the past few months I realized that she really is an interesting person, with a quirky sense of humor.
Megan is a really really good friend of mine, who I met three years ago in freshman homeroom. Before that she went to a christian school, which was really small. Her mom is from Mexico, and she has a big Mexican family. Also she has a cousin who reminds me of Antonio Banderas, except an Antonio Banderas who is rather stupid with the maturity of a 12 year old boy. It's unfortunate. He has great hair though. Megan and I have become really close lately, and although we don't have any classes together, we still make time to see each other. Friendships outside of school really are the best because you get to know people on a deeper level.
Carina is a bit of an oddball, because she is republican and a christian, which is weird in my school. But you know what, it doesn't matter, because she is a really nice person, and I like her anyway. We can argue about her views on things, but her views don't depict who she is. I mean, I can get angry at her views, but I don't get angry at her.
Danika, I have known off and on for years, since first grade in fact. We are like planets that orbit in and out, and sometimes we align on the same path. She has horrible parents who yell a lot, and so she works really hard at school, I think maybe to block it out. And she is on crew team, which takes up a lot of time. -Censored- A bit twisted, isn't it? I don't like it. At all. Poor Patrick. . . he has been mistreated for a long time because he has alientated himself and been alienated for such a long time, since middle school. But although he has been seen as a social outcast, and now, some of my friends think, as creepy, he also has a twinkle in his eye when we talk. A joyful twinkle. and I like him for that :)
Oofda, it really is time for me to eat dinner now. And I have a bunch of homework to do. But it was nice writing to you, and I hope you enjoy hearing about my life, even though I can be a little disjointed when I right. If something doesn't make sense, don't hesitate to ask me what I mean. Sometimes I use slang. Is English your first language, or something else?
I'd love to hear more about your friends, or your school, or what you did this week, or what you want to do when you graduate, or if you have pets, or what you do in the summertime, or what you do when you're bored. If you have time to write that is.
Truly,
Maia
PS. I'm sorry if it takes me a while to write back, but I'm pretty busy and I want to have time to write you thoroughly and be inspired, because I like the idea of getting images and random bits of other people's lives through the mail, and I really want to put myself out there like that. It might be a while between letters, but I'll get back to you when I can.
There you have it! That was from a month or two ago. Don't you wish you were my penpal now?
PS. If you haven't played the hot air balloon game off the addictive games page, then you should. It's..er..soothing. Yeah. :)
